ABOUT THE FILM
15-year-old Enrique spends the summer with his grandmother in a Slovak village. While his mother is away working, he rides motorbikes with friends and occasionally runs errands for her, hoping that they will soon be reunited. But rumours are already circulating in the village about her true intentions, and when Enrique discovers that she is hiding something from him, he is forced to choose: accept and support her or stay true to his values and break off the relationship.
Reasons to watch
Katarína Gramatová’s film and the story were inspired by the village of Utekáč, located in the so-called “hungry valley” – an impoverished, sparsely populated region of Slovakia – and its local inhabitants. Part of the cast are non-professional actors from the area portraying themselves. This gave the film an authentic sound and sincerity. Promise, I‘ll Be Fine explores the turning point of adolescence, when we first think about our values and dare to defend them.
