When Hungary opened its borders in the 1990s, travel to France, Italy, or Spain finally became possible, but it was still out of reach for most citizens. This led three young Hungarians, who could not afford international travel, to forge tickets to get to the West. Thanks to their talent and ingenuity, their scheme quickly became an underground business, and a generation of Hungarians hungry for freedom got a chance to see the world beyond the Iron Curtain. But then the authorities and law enforcement caught wind of the scheme...

“What good is freedom if you can’t live it?” This is the question that interests the film’s director, László Csáki. Pelikan Blue is a humorous and at the same time nostalgic documentary animation, visually reminiscent of MTV cartoons from the 1990s. The director began working on this story back in 2011, and later his research grew into an animated project. All the stories mentioned in the film are real. The director talked to the people who came up with this ticket scheme, their clients and even the detective responsible for the investigation.

László Csáki is a Hungarian director and interdisciplinary artist who works with animation and documentary, making short films, commercials and music videos. His projects have been presented in Hungary and abroad, and his films have received several awards at various international festivals.
